A new huge and important distinction for the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, which was awarded for its actions related to the environment in this year’s «GREEK GREEN AWARDS 2023».

The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands was awarded with the «Environmental Information» award,  in the category «ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS – ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION» in the context of the Verde.Tec Technology and Environment exhibition.

Mostly, it was awarded the initiative of the Municipality of Central Corfu to create and publish the recycle.corfu.gr, which is the first municipal website in the history of the island, which deals with all issues related to recycling.

The recycle.corfu.gr is essentially an easy-to-use online guide, which helps citizens to effectively participate in the sustainable management of their household waste and, above all, to decisively reduce their failures at the important stage of “Sorting at Source”. At the same time, it effectively informs them about the available solutions for the separate collection of waste streams that are already offered within the boundaries of the Municipality.

The website which has been created by the Municipality, recycle.corfu.gr, is available in both Greek and English and to date has more than 18,000 views.

It is a pioneering action to inform and raise awareness, but also to provide constant information to the citizens, which aroused the interest of everyone and led to the awarding of this special award to the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands.

The award was received on behalf of the Municipality by the Deputy Mayor of European Programmes, Development, and Digital Governance, as well as the Project Manager of the local team of the ICC – “100 Intelligent Cities Challenge”, Mr. Panagiota Tzanne. The Scientific Advisor, Mr. Victor Dimoulis, had a special and huge contribution to creating this website.

Deputy Mayor Mrs. Tzanne said: “The Municipality of extroversion, which is becoming a model of environmental actions, is here”.

“The Municipality that was unfavorable news for its cleanliness and environmental performance belongs to the past. We are moving forward with modern digital functions and within the standards of European Municipalities and cities”.
