Last week, at the historic City Hall, the “ECOLOGICAL CONSCIOUSNESS MAP” was signed by the Mayor, Meropi Ydraiou, and the president of the “AQUAHELP Foundation”, George Korfia, within the program “Clean it like Greek”.

The Charter was posted today at the Historic City Hall, for signature by citizens and visitors, as a Public Contract for Ecological Consciousness and for themselves.

This program is implemented by the “AQUAHELP Foundation” and is under the auspices of the Hellenic Tourism Organization (EOT) and the Ministry of Tourism.

The Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands, maintaining its undiminished efforts for extroversion and international collaborations but mainly for a real “turn” towards the sustainable and green development of the island and consequently for the substantial further upgrade of its tourist product, decided to Ecology and Philhellenism program “Clean it like Greek” which aims to emerge by 2024, Greece as the cleanest country in the world.

This integration comes as a follow-up to previous similar actions of the Municipality, such as the assessment of the destination of Corfu by the World Council of Sustainable Tourism (GSTC), which included an initial survey of the situation of the island and aims to provide reference data and seek methods for the balanced development of tourism on the island through a roadmap for the sustainable tourism development of Corfu, which will be the basis for planning for the next decade.

A corresponding action is the recent underwater cleaning of the bottoms of the Windmill and Paleokastritsa in collaboration with Aegean Rebreath and the installation of the 1st Marine Waste Collection Station (SSTTHA) as well as the integration of the Municipality of Central and Central Islands, as one of the founding members, in the first network of Municipalities on the protection of the marine environment in Greece which consists of the island and coastal municipalities of the country (“Network of Blue Municipalities”).

It is noted that this action is part of the participation of the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands in the program “100 Intelligent Cities” of the European Commission (100 Intelligent Cities Challenge), where the Municipality participates with the main theme “Waste Management and Circular Economy” »And has as its ultimate goal the reduction of the total carbon footprint of the Municipality.

Also present at the signing of the “ECOLOGICAL CONSCIOUSNESS MAP” were from the “AQUAHELP Foundation”, Mr. Mavridis (CEO) and Mrs. Vekkri (Public Relations) while the Municipality was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of Tourism, Mr. Panagiotis and the Special Advisor for Tourism Mr. Giannis Georgotas, as well as the Deputy Mayor and Project Manager of the local team of ICC – “100 Intelligent Cities”, Mr. Panagiota Janne and the Scientific Advisor and Assistant Project Manager of the local team of ICC, Mr. Victoras Dimoulis.
