The Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands, on the occasion of the International Coastal Cleanup 2021, which is celebrated on September 18, 2021, announces the conduct of another cleanup and inspection of shores and seabed organized and held on the 10th and 11th of September.

More specifically, our Municipality hosted the program “Greece without Single-Use Plastics” through which 2 underwater cleanings were carried out with parallel inspection of the seabed (composition and depth, biodiversity, aquatic organisms, and pollutants) in the Old Port on 10/09/2021 and at the Ipsos Fishing Shelter on 11/09/2021 while during the second action, coastal cleaning was also carried out in the area of ​​Ipsos.

At least 300 kilos of marine litter, mainly consisting of vehicle tires, plastic litter of various forms (disposable cups and straws, bottles, bags, etc.), glass and metal packaging, etc. was removed from all cleaning activities during the two days while all parties pledged to continue actions to protect and upgrade the marine environment.

The Municipality thanks the contributors of the program “Greece without Single-Use Plastics” which includes the Public Benefit Foundation AK. Laskaridis, Lidl Hellas, the Environmental Organization “DiveInAction”, the Corfu Port Authority and the Harbor Master, Lieutenant Commander Mr. Ioannis Stathouros for their valuable assistance in providing equipment and human resources during the clean-up operations.
