Mapping and cleaning of the seabed in the central bay of Paleokastritsa were carried out yesterday by the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands, with the valuable help of the AHEPA Corfu Department HJ-34 and the voluntary participation of the Achilleon Diving Center and the Boatmen Association of Paleokastritsa.

From the specific action of cleaning the seabed, findings were obtained which were counted and filled with about 10 large garbage bags, which included mainly:

200 plastic pieces
30 glass pieces
5 metal pieces

and which after the end of the action were led for recycling.

Also, they were mapped and will be removed immediately with the use of appropriate equipment and about 5 bulky objects which could not be lifted by the divers who attempted during the action.

With the removal of these massive objects, the complete cleaning of the seabed of one of the most emblematic beaches of Corfu will be completed, where it will be returned clean to the residents and visitors of the island.

This action comes as a normal continuation of the previous efforts of the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands to protect and ensure the quality of the Corfu marine and coastal environment, efforts which were recently awarded the award “Best Practice for Marine Environment Protection”.

It is noted that this action is part of the participation of the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands in the program “100 Intelligent Cities” of the European Commission (100 Intelligent Cities Challenge), where the Municipality participates with the main theme “Waste Management and Circular Economy”.
